Tom Cruise has appeared on the cover of Empire many times over the years, often in different guises. In full navy get-up for A Few Good Men. Long-haired, circa Interview With The Vampire. In Japanese armour for The Last Samurai, and a battle-mech suit for Edge Of Tomorrow. Several appearances for Mission: Impossible movies, sometimes surrounded by flame, others riding a motorbike in mid-air. But among those – and many other – Tom Cruise covers, you’ve never seen one like this. Because on the cover of the fresh issue of Empire, it isn’t really Tom Cruise in the time-honored sense: it’s Digger Rockwell.

This month’s Empire is a world-exclusive deep-dive into Digger – the daring fresh collaboration between Cruise and director Alejandro G. Iñárritu – getting to the murky heart of their apocalyptic comedy. Inside, we speak to the director about his vision for a different kind of disaster movie, and hear the full story from Cruise on getting into the mind and body of a character like he’s never played before, as Hollywood’s biggest star takes his biggest swing. Plus, we speak to Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman and more on inhabiting Digger’s wild world, with never-before-seen images from this year’s boldest original movie. And that’s not all – also in this issue, we get the full story on Marvel’s fresh T’Challa in Black Panther III, go into the belly of the beast on Whalefall, get a status update on Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning, step into the ring with Street Fighter, get existential with VisionQuest, take a bite with Bad Apples star Saoirse Ronan, start a revolt with Andrew Garfield on The Uprising, and much more. You won’t want to miss it.

Empire’s Digger issue comes to newsstands from Thursday August 27. Pre-order a copy online here. Digger comes to cinemas from 2 October.
