“Nothing is as it seems in this house and in this family.” Cinépolis Distribución has revealed the first official trailer for a film titled Overboard, a peculiar comedy directed by Mexican actor / filmmaker Gael García Bernal who also stars in it. The original Spanish title of the film is Hombre al agua (or Man Overboard) and it’s Bernal’s first film he has directed since making Chicuarotes in 2019 (which had really bad reviews). This time he’s got another original story to tell about a wealthy man controlling manipulating people’s lives. “What would you do if your perfect life turned out to be a trap?” Overboard follows Camilo, a lifeguard who arrives in Mexico believing he’s found a novel opportunity, only to discover that it’s all part of a much darker plan. After rescuing a Mexican business plan and marrying his daughter, he discover it is all a trap to operate him. “A film by Gael García Bernal that blends humor, suspense, and a story you won’t want to miss.” Also starring Esmeralda Pimentel, Débora Nascimento, Natalia Oreiro, Anna Díaz, Ezequiel Díaz, Manuel García Rulfo, Jorge Salinas, and Cuban popstar Ricky Martin. This is premiering at the 2026 Venice & Toronto Film Festivals this fall with a Mexican release in September. Anyone curious to watch it?

Camilo (Gael García Bernal), a Cuban lifeguard, saves Mexican businessman Abel (Jorge Salinas) from drowning. Grateful, Abel brings Camilo to Mexico, where he marries Abel’s daughter, Juana (Esmeralda Pimentel), and they have a child. But Camilo soon discovers his novel life is part of Abel’s Machiavellian plan of manipulation and control. With his world completely collapsing, Camilo must uncover the plot and take control of his destiny. Will he find a way out, or remain trapped in the power game? Overboard, also known as Hombre al agua (or Man Overboard) in Spanish, is directed by Mexican actor / filmmaker Gael García Bernal, director of the feature films Déficit and Chicuarotes, many other low films, and eps of “Mozart in the Jungle” and “Here on Earth” previously. The screenplay is written by Mariano Pensotti and Gael García Bernal. Produced by Fernanda de la Peza, Gael García Bernal, Stacy Perskie. This is premiering soon at the 2026 Venice Film Festival in the Spotlight section and will also play at TIFF. It’s set to open in Mexico starting in September 2026. No other release dates are confirmed yet – stay tuned. Looking good?
