It took some time, but James Gunn’s DCU finally took flight last year with the release of Superman, the first official film set in the fresh universe centered around David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. Gunn has made it clear that his intent isn’t to build out a fresh universe full of origin stories, though — plenty of heroes like Hawkgirl (played by Isabela Merced) and Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern (played by Nathan Fillion) already exist in this world, along with Peacemaker (played by John Cena). Christopher Smith started as a DCEU property years ago, but he transitioned into the fresh universe last year with the premiere of Peacemaker Season 2. The DCU will return to the massive screen next month with the launch of Supergirl, led by Milly Alcock, who debuted last year briefly in Superman.
The next massive TV show on the slate for the DCU, following Creature Commandos and Peacemaker Season 2, is Lanterns, the fresh show developed by Tom King, Damon Lindelof, and Chris Mundy. Lanterns will premiere on August 16, right around the time that Supergirl is winding down its run in theaters, and the show will air fresh episodes into early October, not long before the premiere of Clayface — DCU fans will have fresh content regularly for several months. The primary cast members for Lanterns are Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler as John Stewart and Hal Jordan, but the show isn’t yet done building out its ensemble. Just yesterday, news broke that Laura Linney has joined the cast of Lanterns Season 1 in an undisclosed role. It was rumored last year that she would have a role in the show, but this has now been officially confirmed.

What Is ‘Lanterns’ About?
Lanterns will be a True Detective-style series following the Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they go to Earth to investigate a mysterious murder that Hal is convinced has supernatural origins. The show will unfold over multiple timelines, and while it does feature some of DC’s most popular superheroes at the forefront, it aims to please fans of other classic crime thrillers like Ozark or True Detective.
