It’s Time for Christopher Nolan To Bring This 17-Episode Sci-Fi Masterpiece Back

Filmmaker Christopher Nolan has had a weighty hand in steering the science fiction genre over the last few decades, from space odysseys to time travel and beyond. His next project may bridge the gap between his own groundbreaking work and the sci-fi of past generations, which set the stage for Nolan’s career. The acclaimed director is attached to a movie remake of The Prisoner — a British TV series that aired in 1967. The short-lived series has endured for years in the sci-fi fandom, and today its approach to spy fiction and allegory might be more relevant than ever. There have been a few attempts to get this remake going — with Nolan and without him — but this time, the project may finally move forward.

The Prisoner aired one season on ATV in the U.K. nearly six decades ago now, but it has never been forgotten. The series was created by Patrick McGoohan, who also starred as a British intelligence agent named Number Six. The story began with Number Six resigning from his position, only to be abducted and held prisoner in a miniature village on the coast. Over the next 16 episodes, Number Six tried to uncover all the secrets of his captors, delving deep into conspiracy and uncertainty that resonated with newfangled audiences.

‘The Prisoner’ Is More Relevant Than Ever

The Prisoner was advertised as an action-adventure series, though it didn’t really deliver on that front. On the surface, it was a tense psychological thriller series full of mystery and intrigue, but its lasting legacy is really about its allegorical story. Many fans understood the show as an interrogation of newfangled life, and the fear of how recent technology would facilitate homogonous pop culture, potentially erasing smaller niche identities in the process.

The entire world has dealt with those questions over the last half century, but in the meantime, technology has continued to evolve at an exponential pace. In 2026, this premise might be more relevant than ever — not only has social media become the center of pop culture as we know it, but streaming and online content creation have managed to circumvent many of the broadcast standards put in place when widespread telecommunication first became available.

That said, The Prisoner still needs a sturdy artistic voice behind it in order to take on these issues again, and Nolan is a great choice. In the wrong hands, the series could feel dated, and the allegory could fall flat. It could also be too faithful, delivering the same message again with no updates to make it feel pertinent today. Nolan is the right person for this job, as his track record with sci-fi social commentary shows.

Will ‘The Prisoner’ Actually Get Remade?

At this point, the massive question is whether Nolan’s The Prisoner will ever get made. The project has been in the works for many years now, and has already had a few near-misses. He first signed onto the project in 2009, but dropped out shortly after. In the same year, a U.S. remake of the series aired on AMC, and it was met with generally negative reviews. It starred Jim Caviezel as Number 5 and Ian McKellen as Number 2, but critics and fans felt it missed all the essential context for the original series.

That flop may have led Nolan and studios to second guess the viability of The Prisoner, but not for long. Another film adaptation was planned in 2016, this time directed by Ridley Scott. After that one fell through, Nolan’s name came up again starting in 2024. At the time, sources told Variety that The Prisoner might be next on Nolan’s to-do list, but now we know that wasn’t true. Still, the rumor stirred up a lot of nostalgia and anticipation online.

At this point it’s not clear how realistic it is to hope The Prisoner remake is still coming. Aside from that 2024 rumor, the best hope for the series is fan enthusiasm. We’ve seen how social media campaigns and even petitions can steer studios in recent years — there even some major Hollywood decisions that fans suspect were made based on passive readings of social media. Ironically, that’s exactly the kind of phenomenon The Prisoner would give commentary on in 2026, so it could be fitting.

Still, Nolan himself would need to be enthusiastic to pick this project up again. After decades of success and recent notable hits like Oppenheimer, Nolan could likely choose any project he wanted and get support from Hollywood, as his name carries so much weight. The director is currently working on a film adaptation of The Odyssey, and there’s no word on what he plans to do next.

For now, fans can stream the original 17 episodes of The Prisoner and decide for themselves if it deserves a remake. The series is currently uncomplicated to find — it’s free to watch on YouTube TV, Tubi, Sling TV, and Prime Video. Nolan will be back in theaters with The Odyssey on July 26.
