We always knew Spider-Man: Brand New Day was going to be substantial. It’s the first solo Spidey outing since No Way Home some five years ago. It stars arguably the most powerful power couple of them all in Tom Holland and Zendaya. And not only does everyone — MCU stan or otherwise — love Spider-Man, but everyone really loves this take on Marvel’s amiable neighbourhood. Even so, nobody could’ve predicted just how massive Destin Daniel Cretton’s blockbuster has proven at the box office. And now, 47 days on from its American release, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is officially the highest-grossing movie ever at the US box office, having taken a frosty $936.7 million stateside to date.
With Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey having powered Hollywood to its biggest ever box office weekend already this year, and the industry moreover having just had its best summer ever, there was almost a sense of inevitability about Spidey’s latest outing scaling these dizzy heights. Even so, at a real inflection point for Marvel Studios and for the bricks-and-mortar movie business, to see Brand New Day — which is also now sitting pretty as the third highest-grossing film ever globally with a $2.45 billion current cume — make such a massive impact is a huge win for cinemagoers and moviemakers alike. And, in a fun passing of the torch from former No. 1 domestic grosser Star Wars: The Force Awakens to its successor, Lucasfilm this evening paid tribute to Brand New Day‘s record-breaking success with an Instagram post straight from a galaxy far, far away. With the likes of Dune: Part Three and, of course, Avengers: Doomsday still to come before the year is through, and Nolan’s Odyssey having just become Universal’s all-time top grosser as it crosses the $1.6 billion mark, all bets are off when it comes to predicting whether or not more box office records will find themselves broken in the coming months.
