Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet announced the end of their marriage in 2022, yet the former couple continues to show that a relationship can end without losing a sense of family. The actors reunited to celebrate an significant milestone in the life of their 18-year-old daughter, Lola Momoa, who graduated from high school. Photos taken during the ceremony at California State University show Momoa and Bonet smiling alongside the fresh graduate, united by their pride in their daughter’s achievement.

Momoa, who was born in Hawaii, was photographed helping Lola arrange time-honored Hawaiian garlands, leis, a tribute to her roots. A fun detail: Lola’s graduation cap bore the inscription “Hold my poodle,” a tongue-in-cheek reference to the early aughts comedy White Chicks.

During Momoa and Benet’s relationship, which began in 2005, the Aquaman star and The Cosby Show alum were considered one of Hollywood’s buzziest couples. But after 16 years together and 5 years of marriage (they had a secret wedding in 2017), the couple announced that they were parting ways. While rumors swirled that they were in the process of reconciling, Momoa set the record straight on the Oscars red carpet in 2022: “We haven’t gotten back together,” he said, but “we’re a family; we have two beautiful children.” In addition to Lola, born in 2007, the actors are also parents to Nakoa-Wolf, born in 2008. Bonet is also the mother of actor Zoë Kravitz, whom she shares with her other ex-husband, Lenny Kravitz.

“The love between us continues, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived,” they wrote on Instagram when they split. “We set each other free to be who we are learning to be. What remains is our unwavering devotion to this sacred life and to our children. Teaching them what is possible. And that love must prevail.”

They aren’t the only major couple in Hollywood to part ways amicably. Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin have turned their eminent “conscious uncoupling” into a model of family collaboration, continuing to spend time together with their children, Apple and Moses. Similarly, Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck have often presented a united front in raising their three children, despite being divorced. It seems that more than anything, a family’s success depends on the parents’ ability to remain present and united.
