“Even if we make it to the top, I have to ski down the 9000 foot face.” National Geographic has unveiled the first official trailer for the intense documentary film titled Everest: The Other Side, the latest from doc filmmakers E. Chai Vasarhelyi & Jimmy Chin. This is premiering at the 2026 Venice Film Festival this week and also playing at Telluride this weekend before it hits theaters in the fall. Of course it’s being released on IMAX screens as well, as NatGeo loves featuring every Everest movie on IMAX. Hilaree Nelson and Jim Morisson shared a dream to climb and ski Everest’s direct North Face Side, located in Tibet, a feat no one had ever accomplished. This is the story of what went wrong and then how the dream continued. Those who follow the climbing community know that Hilaree Nelson passed away in an avalanche on Manaslu in 2022. The rest of this doc film follows Jim Morisson partnering up with Jimmy Chin to finally fulfill their dream and uphold her legacy by completing the mission in her honor. It is not an straightforward task – not only is the climb incredibly demanding on this side of the mountain, attempting to ski down it safely is even harder. ⛷️ I’ve just seen the film and I have some issues with it in how they capture the experience and the depiction of their Sherpa partners, but it’s still an inspiring film about accomplishing your dream(s) no matter what gets in the way.

Here’s the trailer for E. Chai Vasarhelyi & Jimmy Chin’s doc Everest: The Other Side, from YouTube:

Elite ski mountaineers Jim Morrison and Hilaree Nelson fell deeply in love while reaching the pinnacle of their sport. Their drive sharpened into a shared dream: to climb and ski the direct North Face of Everest – the most complex and risky climb on the mountain and the most coveted ski line on earth. Thousands have summited the mountain via Nepal’s southeast ridge, but only a handful have ever reached the top by this route — and no one has successfully skied down. Already known for their extraordinary feats in the mountains and no strangers to loss, Morrison and Nelson stake everything on this daunting challenge. Everest: The Other Side is co-directed by filmmaking duo Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi & Jimmy Chin, directors of the films Meru, Free Solo, The Rescue, Return to Space, Wild Life, Nyad, Endurance, and Lost in the Jungle, and Love+War previously. Produced by Shannon Dill, Anna Barnes, Bob Eisenhardt, Janet Yang. This is premiering at the 2026 Venice & Telluride Film Festivals this fall. National Geographic debuts Everest: The Other Side in select US theaters + in IMAX starting October 30th, 2026 this fall. Interested?
