New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF, July 10-26) top brass said Na Hong-Jin’s Cannes Competition sensation Hope will receive its North American premiere as the Centrepiece Film on July 20.
Na’s fourth film and sci-fi action thriller will screen as part of a retrospective of the South Korean writer-director’s work. The festival will also honour the filmmaker with the 2026 Daniel A. Craft Award for Excellence in Action Cinema.
Hope takes place in a remote village near Korea’s Demilitarized Zone, where a police chief hears from locals about the appearance of a tiger and must confront a startling reality as panic spreads through the village
Hwang Jung-min stars alongside Zo In-sung, Hoyeon, Taylor Russell and Cameron Britton, with Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender.
Neon holds North American and English-speaking rights, while Mubi has the film in Latin America, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Turkey. Na confirmed in Cannes that he has already written a sequel.
Plus M Entertainment said in Cannes it had sold Hope in more than 200 territories. Focus Features and UPI France acquired rights for France, Benelux, and South Africa, and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions secured the film for Portugal, Scandinavia, Iceland, Israel, and the Middle East.
NYAFF will screen his other films: 2008 Cannes Midnight entry The Chaser (on 35mm); 2011 Cannes Un Certain Regard selection The Yellow Sea; and The Wailing, which screened out of competition on the Croisette in 2016.
