Obsession is the horror film currently blowing up the box office, grossing over $330 million (and counting) on a budget of a mere $750,000. But long before Curry Barker’s smash hit, The Blair Witch Project made horror history, grossing almost $250 million worldwide from a budget of less than $60,000. While there have been a few attempts to recapture the success of the original, it’s follow ups haven’t quite managed to fork that same box-office lightning. Both Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 and Adam Wingard’s Blair Witch failed to recreate the financial success of the original. Thankfully, for those looking to return to the woods, you’re in luck. Lionsgate took to Instagram to announce that a brand-new Blair Witch film will creep into cinemas on 24 September 2027.
Blumhouse is producing the project alongside Lionsgate, and while plot details limited, we do know that Dylan Clark, the filmmaker behind the terrifying horror brief A Portrait of God, is set to direct from a script by Chris Thomas Devlin, continuing the current trend of major YouTuber horror movies. Plus as previously reported original creators Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick and Gregg Hale are all on board as executive producers, alongside Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, who starred in the original 1999 found-footage classic. With so much of the original team involved, this already feels like it’s in very unthreatening hands.
Here’s hoping that, with the original innovative team’s blessing, this current trip into the woods gives us another found-footage all-timer that’ll have us trembling in the corner facing the wall. If it can bring the franchise back to its box-office glory while it’s at it, even better. Until then, we’ll be keeping our ears peeled for any rumblings in the woods.
