Key elements of any great ‘80s action movie include a buddy-duo vigorous, and a general sense of Soviet panic. So, it tracks that Mayday – the modern film from director duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, an action-comedy set in 1987 – is a buddy-movie with a Russian twist. Its mismatched central pairing comes in the form of Ryan Reynolds, as a down American Navy Pilot, and Kenneth Branagh, as ex-KGB man Nikolai, forced to team up in the Russian wilderness. Goldstein and Daley have long proven adept at blending comedy with action and tension – just see Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves. Their latest looks like another blast, with Branagh picking up his villainous Tenet accent once again, and slamming bad guys through panes of glass. And Ryan Reynolds continues to do his Ryan Reynolds thing (which, generally, means being very swift and amusing in this kind of movie). Goldstein and Daley direct from a script they wrote together, and their cast also includes Borat sequel standout Maria Bakalova.
Will Mayday prove another Goldstein and Daley banger? Will the combined screen sensibilities of Reynolds and Branagh end up being a delicious peanut butter-and-jam level combo? And can this possibly be profitable for Frito-Lay? We’ll find out when Mayday comes to Apple TV from September 4.
