As the end of 2026 inches closer, online discourse surrounding next year’s Oscars race heats up. Festival season has introduced the world to several names who look set to see their titles among the Best Picture nominees at the 99th Academy Awards. Of course, the frontrunner is Christopher Nolan‘s epic adaptation of Homer‘s The Odyssey, which looks destined to overtake Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners as the most nominated film of all time.

But who would’ve expected one of The Odyssey‘s biggest contenders to come in the form of a documentary, with You Can See Everything now sure to become the first doc to earn a Best Picture nomination? Other contenders for Oscars prizes include Obsession, the horror phenomenon starring Best Actress candidate Inde Navarrette, the Andrew Scott-led Elsinore, filmmaking duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi‘s La Bola Negra, Martin McDonagh‘s Wild Horse Nine, and Cristian Mungiu‘s Fjord, which became the writer-director’s second Palme d’Or winner earlier this year. After much buzz about this politically charged drama, it finally made its restricted debut in American theaters on October 9.

This past weekend, Fjord benefited from a wider opening in domestic theaters, moving from just 13 locations last weekend to 107. This boost was reflected in ticket sales, with Fjord earning a 162% boost as it moved up to 18th in the domestic ranks, coming in ahead of this year’s biggest movies, The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day at theaters this weekend. The biggest earner this past weekend was the debuting Clayface, director James Watkins‘ (Speak No Evil) fresh DCU body horror.

A ‘Fjord’ Star Is Part of 2026’s Biggest Movie

Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value) star in Fjord, and the former is gearing up for an appearance in this year’s biggest film still to come. Stan will reprise his role as Bucky Barnes, last seen in Thunderbolts*, in Avengers: Doomsday. Debuting in theaters on December 18 — the same day as Dune: Part Three — the film features the most impressive MCU lineup yet, including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, and much more.

Sebastian Stan’s Palme d’Or-winning Fjord is in theaters. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for all the latest box office news.
