Universal/Illumination’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has become the first film of 2026 to cross the $1bn mark at the global box office.

As of Monday June 8 the family sequel stood at a shade over $1bn, with $572m from international markets and $428.5m from North America.

The sequel to the 2023 $1.36bn global smash The Super Mario Bros Movie opened in April around the world and has delivered $53.7m in France, $51.1m in UK/Ireland, $46.6m in Japan, and $44.6m in Germany.

Co-directors Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic, and Pierre Lerduc and screenwriter Matthew Fogel all returned, as did key voice cast members Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Charlie Day, Donald Glover, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Keegan-Michael Key, alongside Brie Larson and Glen Powell.
