Ross McElwee’s Remake has won the Golden Globes Impact Prize for Documentary at Venice Film Festival.

McElwee’s film, which played out of competition in the festival’s official selection, is an archive-based film, following McElwee’s relationship with his son Adrian, both before and after Adrian’s death.

The film receives a $10,000 cash prize from the Artemis Rising Foundation which backs the award, as well as work on an impact campaign with Think-Film Impact Production.

The prize is intended to honour a documentary feature film in the festival’s official selection, that calls attention to a key social issue with journalistic and original prowess.

The winner was selected by a jury consisting of Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne, Artemis Rising Foundation founder and CEO Regina K. Scully, actors Jharrel Jerome and Teo Yoo, producer Geralyn White, screenwriter Misan Sagay, director Edoardo Ponti and Think-Film Impact Production founder and CEO Danielle Turkov Wilson.

The jury credited “an incredibly emotional, personal, and moving film” that they said is “n exemplar of documentary creativity and excellence in form, and the power of film to reach and impact audiences.”

The film is produced by Mark Meatto and McElwee for Giant Squid; Cinetic Media is handling world sales.

In the press conference following the festival’s official awards, Gianfranco Rosi, winner of the Competition Special Jury Prize for documentary Below the Clouds, called on the festival to do more to celebrate non-fiction titles.
