Disney’s Toy Story 5 lit up the box office this weekend with a £14.4m UK-Ireland debut.

The animation opened in 702 sites across the weekend, for a £20,514 site average. Including £947,009 in previews, it is now on £15.3m in the territory.

This is the biggest opening weekend for any of the Toy Story films in UK-Ireland, beating Toy Story 4’s £13.3m in 2019. It hasn’t quite overtaken Frozen II as the biggest animation three-day opening of all time, which grossed £15.1m in 2019.

Toy Story 5 has enjoyed the biggest global opening of the year for a US studio film and the biggest ever globally for the Pixar franchise. Andrew Stanton directs his first Toy Story film, having had writing credits on the previous four. Voice cast includes Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack and Greta Lee. When eight-year-old Bonnie has trouble making friends, her concerned parents allow her to get a tablet, which in turn leads her to ignore her toys and disappear into an online world.

Universal’s Disclosure Day added £1.7m in its second weekend, now with £9.1m in the territory overall.

Universal is also in third place with Obsession, adding £924,606 in its sixth weekend, taking the horror up to £15.4m.

Paramount’s Scary Movies third weekend brought in £556,000, boosting its total to £8.4m.

A24’s Backrooms grossed £445,217, a 54% drop on the previous weekend, for a total of £11.8m after four sessions.

Sony’s Masters Of The Universe topped up its total with £396,381 in its third weekend, now on just shy of £5m overall.

Universal’s Michael added £319,376 in its ninth weekend, for a cumulative figure of £52.4m.

Disney’s Star Wars: The Mandalorian And Grogu dropped 57% on its fifth weekend with £219,506, now at a running total of £15.4m.

Bakrania Media’s Cocktail 2 opened to £189,168 from 146 sites, for a location average of £1,300. The Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy is directed by Homi Adajania. The distributor also grossed £4,679 from seven locations for Gujarati father-son drama Jindagi Once More’s opening weekend, for a site average of £668. Jaymin directs.

Disney’s The  Devil Wears Prada 2 dropped 65% in its eighth weekend with £84,624, now totalling £34m.

Sony’s The Sheep Detectives brought in £58,829 in its seventh session, now totalling £9.7m.

Vue Lumiere’s SXSW London opener Virginia Woolf’s Night & Day kicked off with £56,089 from 214 locations, for a site average of £262. With previews, its running total is £65,155. Tina Gharavi’s take on Woolf’s 1919 novel follows an ambitious astronomer, played by Haley Bennett, trying to overcome the patriarchal limitations of 1910 London. Lily Allen, Jack Whitehall and Elya M’Barek also star.  

Welsh-language record

MetFilm’s Welsh-language Effi O Blaenau, directed by Marc Evans, opened to £25,604 from 30 sites, making it the best-performing opening on record for a Welsh-language film at the UK-Ireland box office, with £30,309 including previews. The previous record holder was Picturehouse’sThe Feast in 2022, which opened to £18,000 (plus £10,000 in previews).

Effi O Blaenau – which translates to Effi from Blaenau – has a location average of £853. The adaptation of Gary Owen’s one-woman play Iphigenia In Splott world premiered at Glasgow and stars Leisa Gwenllian.

All The Anime’s 4k re-release of Mamoru Oshii’s 1985 film Angel’s Egg grossed £15,875 in its first weekend from 37 sites, for a location average of £429. Its total jumps to £83,049 including previews.

Peccadillo Pictures’ queer Australian animation Lesbian Space Princess, which world premiered in Panorama at the Berlinale 2025 and is co-directed by Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese, grossed £7,096 in its opening weekend, with an additional £4,049 in previews.

Central City Media’s Hong Kong romance Girlfriends, directed by Tracy Choi, opened to £7,579 from 30 venues, for a site average of £253.

Lotus Visual Productions grossed £8,405 from locations for Mumbai filmmaker Rohan Kanawade’s feature debut, Cactus Pears. The queer Indian drama world premiered at Sundance last year. The site average is £600 and including previews, the total is £12,433.

Curzon’s French New Wave tribute Nino, the feature debut of Pauline Loquès which world premiered last year in Cannes Critics’ Week, grossed £6,594 from 20 sites, for a location average of £330. Including previews, it’s on £9,007.
