Practical Magic 2 took second spot for the month with £7.5m, after a £2.8m opening from September 11 through Warner Bros.

Anthony Maras’ Pressure took third spot with £6.2m for Studiocanal. It is the fourth-biggest title of the year to be produced or co-produced in the UK, behind Hamnet (£19.2m), The Magic Faraway Tree (£15.2m) and The Sheep Detectives (£10m).

Superhero favourites landed in fifth and sixth, through Disney’s Avengers Endgame: Encore and Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

UK-centric titles finding top 10 spots included concert film Oasis: Don’t Look Back In Anger, with the third-biggest full opening for a documentary ever with £2.7m; Jane Austen adaptation Sense And Sensibility, directed by Georgia Oakley and produced by Working Title Films; and Studiocanal’s Aardman stop-motion animation Shaun The Sheep: The Beast Of Mossy Bottom.

The month was evenly split between distributors, with two titles each for Sony, Universal Disney and Studiocanal in the top 10, and one each for Warner Bros and Paramount.

Brand New Day leads the year-to-date chart with £99.2m, with The Odyssey not far behind. Universal is top among distributors on that list with four, with two each for Sony and Disney, and one for Lionsgate and Warner Bros.

Cinemas may already be looking towards a blockbuster-heavy December including Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three. However, titles looking to stake a claim before that in October include Warner Bros’ Digger starring Tom Cruise from today; then Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning for Sony and Paul Greengrass’s The Uprising for Entertainment Film Distributors from October 9.

Universal has animation Forgotten Island from Friday 16, when Paramount has videogame adaptation Street Fighter. Titles landing towards the end of the month include Sacha Baron Cohen’s Ali G: Who Iz I? and Taika Waititi’s Klara And The Sun, both for Sony, and Travis Knight’s stop-motion Wildwood for Black Bear, all on October 23; and Black Bear fantasy Wicker and A24 biopic Primetime, both on October 30.
